रेगिस्तान में मैंने देखा
प्राणी एक नग्न और वहशी
घुटने मोड़े उकड़ू बैठा था ज़मीन पर,
पकड़े हुए हाथ में अपना दिल
बस उसको ही खाता जाता था।
मैंने पूछा, “सुनो, दोस्त, यह अच्छा है क्या?”
“कड़वा है यह, बिल्कुल कड़वा”, झट वह बोला,
“लेकिन अच्छा लगे है मुझको दो वजहों से।
पहली, यही कि कड़वा है यह
और दूसरी, मेरा दिल है।”

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;
“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”
